Rocket Reading

Rocket Reading is a highly successful parent tutor program for students experiencing difficulties with reading and writing.  This program focuses on the explicit teaching of word recognition, phonemic awareness, guided writing and reading texts at easy and instructional levels.  Students are taught strategies to help them read and spell unfamiliar words.

A key component of the program is the involvement of trained and committed parent tutors and teachers.  Each child on the program has three half-hour lessons per week.  Each lesson is conducted on an individual basis.  The three lessons each week may be given by a different tutor during the course of a week. There is a small home component of the program that includes reconstructing a cut‑up story and reading a familiar book.

Students leave the program when their reading level has improved to the satisfaction of the school's Learning Support Team.  To date we have successfully helped many children progress to grade level and continue to progress after participating in  the program.
