Dear Parents,
CONGRATULATIONS
We had a special
visitor to our school assembly last Monday,
Fiona Netting from Wollongong City Council.
Fiona came along to present Celeste with a
special
prize for entering
the Council’s “Compost Creatures” drawing
competition.
Celeste came 2nd in the primary
division winning books, a resource pack and
$30. Celeste also won $200 for the school to
put towards our environmental programs, as well
as a class resource kit on recycling. Well done
Celeste!
NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
The
National Assessment Program Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Year 3 and 5 students was
held this week. The program provides students,
teachers and parents with information about
student ability in the specific areas of
literacy and numeracy.
Detailed results for each student will be
forwarded to parents in September.
SPARKS
The first session
for the SPARKS program will be held next
Monday, 21st May. The students are
very excited and eager to be involved in the
varied activities on offer. The program will
take place every Monday for five weeks every
term with students changing their electives each
term.
This term’s activities include:
Contemporary Dance, Masks, Outdoor Art, String Art, Pottery, Magic
Tricks, Brain Games, Drama, Plaster Painting and
Body Percussion
Many thanks to the team of parents and community
members who are assisting with the SPARKS
program. If you have an hour to spare on Mondays
at 2.00pm for the next few weeks, and would like
to help, please contact Ms Holloway as soon as
possible.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
Stanwell Park
Public has always had a tradition of being a
strong sporting school, both at a team and
individual level. Last Friday, our cross
country team once again performed brilliantly at
the District Cross

number of schools in our District.
Congratulations to all members of the squad.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Our annual Athletics Carnival for all K-6
students
takes place next Wednesday 23rd May
at Beaton Park. Buses will leave school from
8.45am starting with competitors for the 200m
and seniors. It is important that all
students are at school under the supervision
of their teachers, and must travel on the bus as
bus costs are calculated on the entire student
population. All students are asked to attend
school by 8.30am to allow for rolls to be called
and instructions to be given prior to boarding
the buses.
All parents and relatives are invited to attend
the carnival. Thank you to those who have
indicated their assistance with aspects of the
day. If you would like to assist, please let Mr
Harding know as soon as possible so final
organisation can be made.
Many parents like to take their children with
them after the carnival. If you wish to do this,
please remember to sign out your child at the
recording table to ensure teachers are not
searching for them come time to board the bus.

STAGE 3 RESUSCITATION
Next Tuesday, all
our Stage 3 students will participate in a
special program organised by the Wollongong
Bra nch of the Royal Life Saving Society. The
students will take part in learning the theory
of resuscitation and have
the opportunity to
put this into practice with a practical session
involving mannequins.
FOOD ALLERGY AWARENESS WEEK
This week, to coincide with Food Allergy
Awareness Week, classes have revisited the
subject of anaphylaxis and other medical
conditions such as asthma. Activities have been
undertaken in classrooms from K-6.
At Stanwell Park Public we have a
clearly-defined policy on supporting students
with medical conditions. Every term we remind
parents via the newsletter of the need for
vigilance in ensuring products which may cause
anaphylactic reactions among our students, not
be brought to school. We have a number of
students with reactions to peanuts, tree nuts,
eggs, shellfish, kiwi fruit and seafood as well
as insect bites and stings.
Please ensure your
child does not bring to school products such as
these:
·
peanut butter
·
Nutella
·
nut butter of any kind
·
muesli bars with nuts
·
biscuits with nuts
·
nut snacks
·
mixed dried fruits with nuts
·
any nuts at all
·
eggs and egg products
Students susceptible to possible reactions also
need to be vigilant and aware of risks. All
foods should be checked before consumption.
Hands should be thoroughly washed before and
after eating for all students. At the same time
we have a “NO FOOD SHARING” policy with
the students and will regularly remind students
of this.
Individual health plans are in place at the
school and are reflected in our school policy on
Health Care for Students.
Our aim is to ensure as safe an environment as
possible for all students. Your assistance with
this matter is appreciated for the ongoing
safety of the students at Stanwell Park.

KINDERGARTEN PACKAGES
Enrolment packages for students commencing
Kindergarten in 2013 are now available on
request from the school office. If you know of
anyone in the community who has a child starting
Kindergarten in 2013, please let them know.
STRANGER DANGER
Unfortunately there has been a recent spate of
incidents involving students going to or from
schools in the District over the past few
weeks. Teachers regularly review the Stranger
Danger message with their classes. Please
discuss the correct behaviour with your child as
a precaution
WHOOPING COUGH
Parents have advised the school of an incidence
of whooping cough in the student population.
Please be vigilant to the symptoms and seek
urgent medical advice if you are concerned.
Regards,

Keith Tomlinson

SPORT REPORT
Sport has started this term with many trials and
carnivals being completed. Our Cross Country
carnival from last term was a brilliant day and
I applaud everyone for their efforts.
Individual champions were:
8/9 Kasey, Tommy
10 Siena, Jake
11 Scarlett, Joshua
12 Eloise, Noah
Last Friday we sent a squad of 50 runners to
Bulli Park which was the venue of the District
Cross Country Carnival. The behaviour of the
children and the determination they displayed
was outstanding. Stanwell Park came 4th
overall and was 4th in the percentage
ratings.
Individually there were many places in the top
20 which was brilliant considering there was an
average of 60 runners in each race. The
following children will represent North
Wollongong at the Region Carnival:
Kasey – 2nd, Nicholas – 3rd,
Joshua – 5th, Taro – 4th,
Eloise – 3rd and Sophie – 5th.
There are many photos on our website of the
students on the day.
In Trials, Eloise, Leah, Phoebe, Harvey
and Sage attended the Region Hockey trials. All
children played well and enjoyed the day and,
while everyone who attended were unsuccessful in
gaining selection, Leah and Sage made it to the
possible / probables.
The District Touch Trials were held this week.
Noah , Eloise, Scarlet, Arabella and
Phoebe were selected to attend. Noah and
Eloise were successful in gaining selection –
well done!

STOP PRESS!!!!!
P&C GARAGE SALE
Unfortunately, due to lack of interest in
stalls, the planned Garage Sale has had to
be cancelled. Many thanks to the parent
volunteers who spent time organising this
event, but it was not viable to go ahead
with only 2 stalls.
