TERM 4 WEEK 3  2009

Dear Parents,

P&C ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

What a fantastic year of support provided by the P&C!  The P&C have provided well over $13000 of resources and equipment to support our learning programs. This support has been achieved through hard work and the donation of valuable time and energy to attend meetings and coordinate fundraising activities.  On behalf of the students and staff, I would like to thank the members of the P&C for 2009, particularly the executive and fundraising coordinators for this support.  A special thank you to the executive who have given a great deal of their personal time and effort over the past year in support of the students and the school.

At this week’s Annual General Meeting, the following executive positions were nominated and elected for 2010:

President – Alison Rowe

Vice-President – Lisa Gardner
Secretary – Michelle Serio
Assistant Secretary – Melissa Roach
Treasurer – Ian Pepper
Assistant Treasurer – Mardi Allen
Uniform Coordinator – Susan Saberton
Fete Coordinator – Bronwyn McGrath
Fundraising Coordinator – Laure Liss

Congratulations to these people, especially those taking office for consecutive years, and thank you for making this commitment to support the school.  I look forward to working with you next year.

It was extremely pleasing to see a number of new faces at the P&C meeting.  The P&C Association enables parents to work in partnership with teachers and staff to achieve good outcomes for the school and its students. Attending P&C meetings is a really effective way of understanding what is happening in our school. It gives parents an opportunity to develop positive relationships with staff as well as a forum to discuss and help influence the school’s educational, physical and cultural environment and executive decision-making.

We are lucky in our community in that most parents support the P&C activities wholeheartedly, and give their time when events require it.  New members are always welcome.  Why not come to the next meeting to be held on Wednesday 2nd December at 7.30pm?

SELECTIVE HIGH FORMS

Parents of Year 5 students who have requested Selective High School application forms for 2010 are reminded that these are due back at school by next Friday 13th November.  Application forms are still available on request from the school office

KINDER ORIENTATION

Our first in a series of three Kindergarten Orientation Sessions takes place next Wednesday 11th November from 12.00 noon.  These sessions are designed to assist the incoming Kindergarten students in adapting to their new school environment.

At these Orientation sessions, the current Kindergarten students will assist the new students in completing a range of activities.  The three sessions allow for a richer experience of their new surroundings.

A Parent Information Session was held last Wednesday to allow the parents of incoming students the opportunity to find out about important school information, as well as ask relevant questions about the transition process.

TWILIGHT CONCERT

The Twilight Concert is to be held at school next Thursday 12th November from 6.00pm.  This concert is an excellent opportunity for all family members of our band students to come along and share the final performances for the year and enjoy an evening of entertainment.

It is also an excellent opportunity for prospective band members to come along and see what is possible by joining the band program.

BAND 2010 INFORMATION SESSION

For those students and parents who are interested in joining the Band program in 2010 there will be the opportunity to attend a special information session just prior to the Twilight concert.  At 5.00pm, Mrs Carol Brandman from Engadine Music will give an orientation talk to prospective band members and their parents.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and clarify the requirements of the Program.  Parents are then invited to stay and witness the outstanding results of participating in the program at the Twilight Concert.

TROPHIES

Were you the recipient of a perpetual trophy at last year’s Presentation Night or Special Awards Assembly?  If so, now is the time to return the trophy to school to give staff time to engrave the new recipient for this year.  Many thanks to those who have already returned their trophies.

MUSICA VIVA

Our Musica Viva performance for the year will take place next Wednesday when the group Sirocco visits our school as part of our Music program.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN ELECTIONS

Year 5 students have been discussing the process of School Captain Elections over the past weeks.  The process starts with nominations by Year 5 students.  Early next week, Year 5 and 6 will review the nomineees according to the criteria and vote on 5 boys and 5 girls to be selected to speak at the school assembly.

At the school assembly in Week 6 these nominees will speak.  Students K-5 will then vote and votes will be ranked overall.  Staff will also vote and the rankings averaged against the student votes.  These procedures adopt suggestions made by students, P&C and staff.  Good luck to our Year 5 candidates.

SOUTHERN STARS 2010

Auditions are currently being organised for individual performers for the following in 2010:

VOCAL – open to students K-6.  Potential vocalists will need to return an application form by Friday 20th November 2009.  Live auditions will be conducted on Monday 7th December in school year groups.  This will be followed by a callback on the same day at a Wollongong school venue.

DANCE – Live dance auditions on 7th December – 9.30-1.00pm venue TBA.  Selected dancers for Company callback will be required to stay for the afternoon session 1.00-3.00pm.

INSTRUMENTAL – Live auditions for new members to be held on 11th December. Applications close 20th November.

If any parents or students are interested in auditioning, please collect an application form and further details from the school office or from the website – http://rasouth.net.au.

SPORTING CHAMPION

Congratulations to Scout  who last weekend was successful in being crowned National Champions of the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation.  Scout competed with her troupe at Homebush.

Well done Scout – Australian Champion!

P&C APOLOGY

Julie Archer, on behalf of the P&C, has asked me to place this apology after the meeting on Wednesday.  Unfortunately a number of parents who have paid for items from the uniform shop have recently had difficulties with cheque payments.  This is entirely due to the time taken to process the cheques by tSorryhe P&C and, for this, the P&C humbly apologises to all parents affected.

The problem has arisen due to the procedures for processing payments.  Susan Saberton (our wonderful uniform shop coordinator) reconciles the money collected on a monthly basis and presents this to the P&C Treasurer for banking.  Unfortunately, due to many reasons including the holiday break, the time taken recently to bank the cheques was far too long.  The P&C are very aware of this and have put into place procedures to stop this happening in the future.  Apologies again to those affected.

GYMSPORTS

Unfortunately, due to the bad weather on Wednesday, this week’s Gymsports had to be postponed for safety reasons.  There will be a make-up day, probably on a Monday, in a few week’s time.

Regards,

Journey To Antarctica

On the 3/11/09, Chris O’llsen, an Antarctic Adventurer, came to Stanwell Park Public School and showed year 5 & 6 all about Antarctica. He brought in his tools, gear and other equipment for us, including real ice from Antarctica.

Firstly, he showed us a video with pictures he had taken while was there. Chris told us what it was like to live over there in the harsh conditions. He showed us before and after pictures showing how radically the ice is melting and the beautiful wildlife dying.

Secondly, we were shown clothes, tools, rocks, ice, and even smells from Antarctica. We got to wear clothes Chris wore, touch the rocks he had brought back, touched the ice from Antarctica, smelt what a Penguin smells like and we even got to use his pick to hit a block of ice which we than rubbed all over us because we were hot on a boiling hot day.

Finally, he had to pack up and leave but we definitely had a great time and learnt a great amount about Antarctica. I’m sure everyone had huge amounts of fun and personally I wish I could do it again.

EXCURSION RECOUNTS BY 2K

My Trip To Sutherland Hospital – by Tamzen

On Tuesday 2K went to Sutherland Hospital. To get there we went on a mini bus.  That was fun.  When we got there we met our teacher.  Her name was Miss Barbara.  For a while we talked all about hospitals. Then we met the person in charge and we talked about x-rays. We pretended that Hugh had a broken arm.  Then we went to a room that was meant to have four beds but only had two.  We then went to the school room and learnt a song.  Then e dressed up as doctors. We got to keep the hats.  I wish I could go again!

My trip to Sutherland Hospital was fantastic.  Starting off we talked to teachers, then we looked at 3 huge x-ray machines.  Some people got to have a fake x-ray.  Then we went to the hospital school and it looked fun!  We dressed as doctors and nurses.  We met the blood scientist, then we went back to school. I had a great time!

On Tuesday 2K went to Sutherland Hospital.  First we went on a mini bus that was great.  When we got here we talked about the hospital.  That took ages.  Next we went to the x-ray department and learnt all about x-rays.  After we went to see some wards.  We went near my sister’s room when she had a broken arm then we went to the school room.  We learnt about bones and a bone song then we had some morning tea. We had cheese and Jatz.  Then we went to wait for the bus.  People has some morning tea while waiting for the bus.  It was a long drive back to school.  When we got back it was lunch time.  It was great fun.

On Tuesday we went to Sutherland Hospital.  we went to the child and adolescent unit.  We also went to the hospital school.  We went by mini bus because there was only one class going.  We watched a movie about a boy named Jarad going into hospital.  They gave us morning tea and fresh water – it was yummy!  We got to dress up and keep a blue cap.  Ms Barbara was the principal at the school in the hospital.  After dressing up we went back to school.  I had fun!
