| The opportunity for children to read appropriate
texts out aloud to an active listener on a regular basis is
paramount to successful reading development. Stanwell Park’s
K-2 Home reading program is designed to give every child this
opportunity. The following sequence outlines the program:
-
On the student’s news day, children select, with the
assistance of a volunteer parent, 2 or 3 texts from a
levelled selection of fiction and non-fiction books.
-
Text levels are based upon running record assessments
completed by the teacher on a regular basis.
-
Texts are recorded on a home reading sheet. Communication
between the parent and teacher is by the use of a Home Reader
Book. Certificates of achievement being awarded at 50, 100
and 150 and a gold medal award at 175 nights.
The program has been operating very successfully for a number
of years and has become a strong component in the literacy
development of our students. |
